Meet Tyrone

I am founder and managing director of one of the most effective governmental consulting and lobbying firms, Obsidian Advocacy Group. I have over 25 years of professional experience navigating the inner workings of federal, state and local political arenas. My political experience, corporate management background, and legal training makes me an invaluable asset in representing the firm’s roster of clients. While I represent a diverse group of client interests, areas of specialization include(s): healthcare, appropriations, environmental sustainability, energy, education, casino gaming, fund development for non-profits and business development.

I am a native of Detroit, Michigan, graduating from Michigan State University. I was honored to serve my country as a member of the United States Army Reserve, where I was awarded the Army Achievement Medal and honorably discharged in 1997. Later, I earned my law degree from Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley Law School and have been a licensed attorney since 1999.

Prior to founding OAG, I enjoyed a distinguished 20-year career as a partner at one of the state’s premier governmental consulting firms, Public Affairs Associates, Inc. Also, I served as Vice President for External Affairs for SBC Communications (currently AT&T), where I was responsible for planning and directing the company’s legislative, civic and community engagement activities throughout Michigan. The foundation for my career began while serving as Legislative Aide to then State Senator Virgil Clark Smith, learning the intricacies of organized politics and the legislative process.

In 2017, I received a Special Congressional Tribute from the Michigan delegation. Also, I was highlighted by Crain's Detroit Business as one of the "50 Names to Know in Lobbying" in its 2020 and 2022 editions. I split my time between Washington, D.C. and Michigan and enjoys spending quality time with my wife Tanisha and our four children.
